With the election of Shri Sheel Bhadra Yajee, to the post of Working President of the All India Freedom Fighters Organisation, the leadership of the freedom fighters has passed into capable hands.
Born on 22nd March, 1906 at Bakhtiyarpur, a historic village founded by Bakhtiar Khilji, in Bihar. yajee ji is Known as zealous socialist and hard core revolutionary, he made his mark in Political life, after joining the Forward Bloc under the dynamic leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
His achievements were noted all over the country as a founder member of the Forward Bloc. He served as Secretary General; Vice President and President of Forward Bloc.
Educated at the Bihar National College Patna, he gave up his academic career to join the All India Kisan Sabha in 1926 as a great follower of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati.
Shri Sheel Bhandra Yajee has been functioning as number two in Forward Bloc since Netaji took over as President and Party Leader.
Most of Yajeeji’s activities were confined till 1940 to the rural folk where he concentrated on improving the lot of agriculturists and the life of rural youth.
He was elected M.L.Ain 1937 and served Indian National Congress Party as Chief Whip from 1935 to 1945 of Bihar Legislative Assembly. He was a Member of Parliament (Congress) for about fifteen years.
The growing importance of yajeeji was indicated by his organisation of the All India Anti-Compromise Conference under the Presidentship of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose on 29th March, 1940 at Ramgarh (Bihar) where twenty one thousand delegates and two lakh visitors attended the Ramgarh conference in which decision was taken to start National Struggle against British Imperialism.
Shri Yajee showed signs of rising to the very top even when as Secretary General of the All Indian Left Front of eighteen Left Parties and class organisations comprising the All India Forward Bloc, Communist Party of India, Bolshevik Party of India, Communists League of India, Socialist Unity Centre, All India Trade Union Congress and other Left parties and groups from 1947 to 1952.
After the great escape of Netaji to Germany, the responsibility to steer the ship of struggle against British Imperialism fell on the shoulders of Yajeeji. He went under ground along with Mukuandalal Sircar. From January 1941 to June, 1943 Yajeeji maintained contact with Netaji in Berlin.
In 1943 when Netaji took over the Command of Indian National Army at Singapur, he sent a message to Yajee to see him in Singapur personally Yajee escaped by a Japanese submarine and meet Netaji and talked with him for about an hour and returned safely to India to resume under ground activities on mainland of Mother India. The underground life of Yajeeji from 1941 to 1944 is a saga full of thrills, adventures and hair thin escape from death.
In 1944 British Intelligence succeeded to detect the real brain behind the under ground anti-Govt activities and immediately announced a reward of Rs. 25,000/- either to give information and get him (Yajee) arrested alive or dead. After strenuous effort the British Government succeeded to arrest Yajee in Bombay. He was kept in underground solitary cell in Salimgarh ( Red Fort Delhi) and was continuously tortured mercilessly for about a year till Mahatma Gandhi intervened.
After Avadi Congress Session in 1952 Yajeeji joined Indian National Congress and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru appointed him Secretary of A.C.C. for North Eastern Zone, comprising Assam, Arunachal Pardesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur.
Since 1972, Shri Yajeeji has been steering the ship of about 5 lakh freedom fighters most successfully. He is a moving ambassador and guardian of freedom fighters. He spares no stone to mitigate their sufferings. He is a true socialist in his thought and deeds.
